Although it can be problematic to see the two as isolated binaries, I once had a friend brilliantly characterize the difference between spirituality and religion:
Spirituality is an experience with the Divine
Religion is an explanation of that experience.

Spirituality is the cognizance of the relationship with God and [true] religion is the submission of one's spiritual and carnal desires to the orders of God in the way God (not our desires or conjecture) ordered us to do so.
